2016 Hyland Riesling
THE WINE
Hyland Vineyard is one of the Willamette Valley's historic vineyards, planted in the early 1970s with clonal selections of Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Noir that originated in Alsace. These vines are now referred to as "Coury" selections‒named for Charles Coury, who sourced the cuttings. The 53-year-old vines are deeply self-rooted in Jory soil (weathered volcanic basalt) and are farmed organically and without irrigation.
Hyland is situated on the shoulder of the Van Duzer Gap, the "air-conditioning" pathway through the Coast Range where marine air enters from the west and cools the Willamette Valley. Persistent wind spills over this neighborhood, moderating temperatures and allowing for patient ripening and retention of fresh acidity. Noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) reliably sets in weeks before harvest in this old block of Riesling, concentrating sugars and contributing to aromatic and textural complexity.
We believe Hyland to be one of the New World's great growth terroirs for Riesling.

"The 2022 Riesling Hyland Vineyard is more floral and fruity on the nose, with notes of candied lime, peaches, candied ginger, and fresh tropical flowers, as well as more honey. Medium-bodied, it’s fully dry and really electric in its personality, and while its acidity is bright and persistent, it’s ripe and not austere. This fantastic Riesling is going to drink well over the long haul"

"The 2025 Riesling Hyland Vineyard 1G-North is the first dry wine made from this site after the previous two vintages were Beerenauslese-style wines. Pouring a brilliant pale silver/yellow hue, it reveals quince, floral perfume, and remarkable concentration from nearly 60-year-old vines that continue to perform exceptionally. Medium-bodied, it combines great texture, complexity, freshness, and levity despite its concentration. Evan Martin continues to produce some of the most age-worthy Rieslings in Oregon. Though not yet released, this should evolve beautifully for two decades or more"

"The 2025 Riesling Hyland Vineyard 1G-North awakens in the glass with a spritz of lemon and lime before delving into crushed rocks, nectarine and rosemary. It tempts the senses with round textures and mineral-infused orchard fruit, mixing salty and sweet with a tart citrus twang at the close. The palate remains completely refreshed, long and tense yet salivating. Wonderfully balanced and harmonious, it finishes at just 2.6 grams of residual sugar per liter. The vines that make up the 1G-North block were planted in 1973 at 625 feet of elevation on a north-facing slope in Hyland Vineyard."
